Electric Vehicle Charging Station to Open in Guadalupe

GUADALUPE, Calif. —The City of Guadalupe and Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District will commemorate the city’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging station with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 26, 2017, at 11:30 AM. The public and media are invited to attend.
Located in a city parking lot at 880 Guadalupe Street, the station will attract regional and traveling EV drivers visiting the city’s downtown area and will encourage residents to consider driving electric vehicles. The station will also provide a key charging location for EV drivers along Highway 1, filling a gap in the existing network of stations between Pismo Beach and Lompoc. The Level 2 station will provide ports to charge two cars at a time. To encourage the use of alternative energy vehicles, there is no cost for recharging electric vehicles.
Mayor John Lizalde commented on the addition of the EV charging station, “This is yet another example of the City of Guadalupe looking toward to the future and making positive change.” Lizalde is expected to speak during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
A $10,000 grant from the District’s EV Charging Station Infrastructure Program helped fund the equipment and installation of the station, which will be publicly accessible 24 hours per day, every day. Countywide, the District’s grant program has helped install 16 EV charging stations, with 28 ports to charge 28 cars.
“This Guadalupe station is a great addition to our Santa Barbara County charging network, and I’m proud that we were able to help with this installation,” said District Director Aeron Arlin Genet, who will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Cars contribute significantly to local and statewide air pollution. Building a robust clean fuels corridor throughout the Central Coast is an essential strategy, and electric vehicles are an important tool in reducing pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Cleaner cars mean cleaner air for all of us.”
This station puts Guadalupe on the EV charging map, which continues to expand in Santa Barbara County — with upward of 50 public charging stations — and in California, home to more than 11,000 charging stations. Electric cars in California will get even cleaner over time, as the state’s electrical grid increasingly relies on renewable energy sources.
